A Nod to Retro: Dressing Smart for Formal and Casual Occasions

When it comes to the latest in on-trend men's formal wear, take your inspiration from a rewind back to the 1980s. Alternatively, take a nod from the 50's and throw in some classically inspired accessories and you've got all the attitude you need for a big night out. Whatever the event, there's an exciting and varied choice for all levels of adventurousness in fashion.

Six buttoned double-breasted jackets with a boxy cut are all the rage on the catwalk; but unlike their retro inspiration they are not pin-striped - dark and plain is the order of the day, or alternatively a camel coloured or fleck texture. However, when it comes to donning the good stuff for a special night out the slim-fit, single-breasted suit has also captured our imagination, and is definitely on-trend.

If you are stepping out in a suit this season, you may notice the more fashion forward pairing it up with leather gloves and formalwear woollen hats mixed with a stubby, high on the neck scarf. Indeed, accessories are an easy way to modernise your look whilst keeping warm on a crisp, cold evening.

Under your suit, shirts featuring bold checks, plaids and graphic horizontal stripes are the trends to watch. Alternatively the crisp white shirt still makes an appearance, but this season with a small collar; either buttoned up to the neck or left open and worn tucked into trousers - preferably a contrasting dark grey pair.

Another area in menswear to watch this season is the newest trends in shirts and ties. If you are considering wearing a tie, bear in mind that bold stripes are making a comeback. If you opt to go more formal but without a suit, then tone-on-tone ties worn with a shirt featuring a soft yielding knit or cashmere gives a cool and laid-back appearance.

Another key accessory expected to feature again this year is the bow tie, especially when partnered with a casual shirt. This pairs perfectly well with the new whip thin belts making a resurgence on the catwalks and beyond.

For special days or nights out when formality isn't expected, look for straight-legged jeans or trousers - worn long or rolled up rockabilly style. Go for the worn-out, naturally faded look and of course, don't forget the bag!

Whatever the occasion, today's men's clothes and accessories offer a huge choice and your look can be on-trend and as individual as you like.
